The history of the area now known as South Carolina’s Lowcountry begins with pre-Columbian settlements along the coast and in the interior, specifically in present-day Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, and Georgetown counties. The first European settlers in the area were English colonists who arrived in 1526. These settlers established Charles Town (now Charleston) and began the process of colonizing the region.

Today, it is considered one of the best tourist attractions of all time! There’s something for everyone in the SC Lowcountry. History buffs will love exploring Charleston and learning about its role in the Civil War. Nature lovers can hike through Francis Marion National Forest or paddle through the ACE Basin.
