The History of Charleston

English colonists established Charleston in 1670, starting the colonization of South Carolina. It became the commercial hub of rice and indigo trading.

Charleston, South Carolina is an iconic city renowned for its centuries-old history and vibrant culture. Founded in 1670 by English colonists seeking a fresh start, both the independence movement of America and Revolutionary War have intertwined within this port city’s legacy – only to be later liberated by French forces under General Rochambeau. Its colorful past makes it one of the oldest cities in all North American colonies that continues to spark curiosity today!

It is home to both Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie.

In recent decades, Charleston has experienced a renaissance as its charming streets have been revitalized with old-fashioned charm and modern amenities. The city’s historic architecture and quaint cobblestones have become popular destinations for tourists from all over the world, and its renowned restaurants serve up some

See And Do In Charleston

Charleston, South Carolina, has a lot to experience for such a small place.

In the middle of Charleston’s historic district, the Battery and White Point Gardens come with scenic views of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor. The old mortars and canons add a dash of history to the beautiful public gardens open to the public since 1837. Fort Sumter is where the American Civil War started and can be accessed by booking a tour that includes the ferry ride to the historic landmark.

The Gibbes Museum Of Art showcases 6-8 exhibitions annually and has permanent art collections, including photography, painting, sculpture and illustrations.

When you want to take a peaceful walk, the Waterfront Park that runs along Cooper River and Charleston Harbor is perfect. The park was bestowed the 2007 Landmark Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is also home to the very Instagrammable pineapple water fountain.

Middleton Place is a plantation with the oldest landscaped gardens in America. See The House Museum, take a tour or just enjoy exploring the pretty gardens that go on for acres.
