Fall Magic of McDowell County

There’s something about McDowell County that keeps me coming back. Maybe it’s the rugged mountain landscapes, the small towns full of character, or the fact that you can spend the morning exploring a quiet forest trail and the afternoon enjoying a great meal or a cold beer downtown.

Whatever it is, this corner of Western North Carolina has become one of my favorite places to explore. And lately, there’s even more reason to visit.

New breweries, restaurants, and creative businesses are bringing fresh energy to the county’s downtowns. Mountain biking continues to grow, outdoor recreation opportunities are expanding, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is welcoming visitors back to some of the most beautiful stretches of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for somewhere new to explore this fall, McDowell County deserves a spot on your list.

Old Fort NC

Old Fort: An Outdoor Adventure Hub

Old Fort has quickly become one of Western North Carolina’s most exciting destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by Pisgah National Forest, the town offers access to incredible hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and waterfalls, all within minutes of a downtown that’s developed a personality of its own.

Catawba Falls is a must-see, with a beautiful forest trail leading to an impressive waterfall and a staircase system climbing toward Upper Catawba Falls. For something shorter, Tom’s Creek Falls offers an easier outing, while Curtis Creek offers some wonderful fly fishing.

Mountain biking is another major draw. Trails like Kitsuma Peak, Heartbreak Ridge, and the Gateway Trails have helped put Old Fort on the map, offering everything from approachable forest rides to challenging mountain descents.

One of the area’s newest attractions is Foothills Watershed, a 117-acre bike park near Catawba Falls that combines purpose-built trails with food, drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere.

And when you’re ready to head downtown, there’s plenty waiting.

Old Fort NC

Gogo’s Cinnamon Rolls and Seeker Coffee are excellent places to start the morning, while bSide Bakery & Books brings an eclectic mix of fresh bread, focaccia, and independent books to town.

For lunch, check out Black Beary’s, 27 Main, or Davis Country Store & Cafe, each offering its own take on small-town dining.

Old Fort’s creative side is worth exploring too, with NANU Gallery, Arrowhead Gallery & Studios, and the Mountain Gateway Museum showcasing the area’s art, history, and culture.

The craft beverage scene is particularly impressive for a town this size. Hillman Beer offers a great riverside setting, Whaley Farm Brewery specializes in European-inspired beers, and Euda Wine is a welcoming stop for wine lovers.

Newer additions like Modern Alchemist and the Appalachian Mountain Brewery Outpost & Kitchen are bringing even more variety to the downtown scene.

What makes Old Fort special is how naturally it all fits together. You can spend the day exploring Pisgah National Forest and still have an entire evening of restaurants, breweries, and local businesses to enjoy.

Marion: A Downtown Finding Its Groove

Just a short drive away, Marion offers another side of McDowell County, with a historic Main Street, locally owned businesses, and an increasingly interesting food and drink scene.

There’s a great mix of old and new here. Historic brick storefronts and familiar local businesses share downtown with newer restaurants, breweries, and specialty shops.

Main Season Market & Brewery is one of the more interesting additions, combining craft beer with a market featuring local foods and specialty groceries. Bigfoot Books & Brews and Marion Wines add even more personality to downtown, while new dining options continue to expand the culinary scene.

Marion is also a great place to slow down and explore. Browse the shops, grab lunch, or visit the nearby Historic Carson House for a look into the county’s past.

And with the mountains beginning to show their fall colors, Marion makes a convenient home base for exploring the surrounding countryside, scenic roads, and outdoor attractions.

Lake James and Nebo: A Change of Scenery

One of the things I love about McDowell County is how much variety you can experience in a single day.

A short drive from the mountains around Old Fort brings you to the beautiful blue waters of Lake James, where forested hillsides meet nearly 7,000 acres of water. It’s a fantastic place for kayaking, paddleboarding, boating, fishing, or simply relaxing along the shoreline. Lake James State Park offers hiking trails, camping, and beautiful views of the lake, while Bear Creek Marina & Restaurant provides another way to enjoy the waterfront.

Nearby Nebo offers a quieter, rural side of the county, with rolling farmland and scenic backroads. One of the area’s standout destinations is Fonta Flora Brewery at Whippoorwill Farm, where locally inspired craft beer and a beautiful countryside setting make for a great afternoon.

It’s the kind of place where you come for a drink and end up staying much longer than planned.

Linville Gorge and the Blue Ridge Parkway

For some of the most dramatic scenery in Western North Carolina, head toward Linville Gorge. Often called the Grand Canyon of the East, this rugged wilderness is known for its towering cliffs, challenging hiking trails, and incredible mountain views. From Hawksbill to Wiseman’s View, both sides of the gorge offer world class scenery.

Nearby Linville Falls is another highlight, with scenic overlooks offering different perspectives of the waterfall as it drops into the gorge below.

And one of the most exciting developments for the region is the continued reopening of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Mountains in Autumn

With most of the Parkway now accessible, including the scenic stretch leading toward Little Switzerland, visitors can enjoy some of the area’s most spectacular mountain drives. It’s especially exciting during October and November when the ridgelines and valley below turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.

Perched high above the foothills, Little Switzerland is a wonderful place to enjoy the scenery, grab a meal, or spend the night.

The Switzerland Inn, Big Lynn Lodge, and Skyline Village Inn offer mountain accommodations, while nearby NC Highway 226A, known as the Diamondback, provides one of the region’s most memorable winding drives.

Between the Parkway, Linville Gorge, and the surrounding mountain communities, this part of McDowell County is worth exploring at a leisurely pace.

Stay a Little Longer

McDowell County has some fantastic places to stay, and I think spending a night or two is the best way to experience everything the area has to offer.

Old Fort NC

Near Old Fort, Little Mountain A-Frame is one of my personal favorites, with creative design, a hot tub, and a peaceful wooded setting. In Marion, Tabletop Inn offers a completely different experience, with an enormous collection of board games and a fun, welcoming atmosphere.

Other accommodations, including Grier Village and Wunderland Resort, are adding even more options for visitors looking to spend time in the mountains.

Whether you’re after a cozy cabin, a lakeside getaway, or a mountain inn with incredible views, there’s something here for just about every kind of trip.

There’s Always Something New to Discover in McDowell County

I’ve spent years exploring McDowell County, and what keeps me coming back is the combination of incredible scenery, interesting communities, and genuinely good people.

It’s a place where you can spend the morning hiking to a waterfall, the afternoon exploring a small-town Main Street, and the evening enjoying a local beer with the mountains in the background.

And while new businesses and outdoor destinations continue to bring fresh energy to the area, McDowell County hasn’t lost the character that makes it special.

Old Fort is becoming a mountain biking destination. Marion’s downtown continues to evolve. Lake James offers an entirely different kind of adventure, and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Linville Gorge deliver some of the most unforgettable scenery in the state.

There’s a lot to love about this corner of North Carolina, and plenty of reasons to keep coming back. So take the scenic route, support a few local businesses, and give yourself some extra time to explore.  You might just find your new favorite mountain getaway. See you out there.
