In a delightful celebration of North Carolina’s natural beauty and artistic heritage, the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) has announced an exciting event for art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. On Saturday, October 19, as part of the Great Trails State Day festivities, a unique treasure hunt will unfold across the scenic trails of Moore County. This creative endeavor features 30 exquisite pottery pinecones crafted by renowned Seagrove artisan Crystal King.
A Blend of Nature and Art
The concept is an extension of the popular Pinecone Pathways Program, which previously captured the imagination of locals and visitors with its enchanting glass pinecones. This fall, however, the spotlight shifts to Crystal King’s creations—each a testament to Seagrove’s storied pottery tradition. Fashioned in a subtle orange hue with verdant pine green leafing, these “Crystal Cones” are not merely art pieces but collectibles, each stamped, numbered, and authenticated by King herself.
Engaging the Community
CVB President and CEO Phil Werz shared insights into the initiative, explaining the desire to sustain the pinecone tradition while introducing a fresh autumnal twist. “We wanted to find a unique way to maintain the popularity of the Pinecone Pathways Program,” Werz noted, highlighting the collaboration with King as a way to integrate Seagrove’s craftsmanship into the seasonal celebration.
A Tradition Rooted in Heritage
Crystal King, whose lineage traces back ten generations within the Seagrove pottery community, expressed her excitement about contributing to the Pinecone Pathways program. Known for her sculptural and animal figurines, King’s work is highly prized, and her involvement adds a layer of cultural richness to the event.
The Event Details
Participants in the hunt will explore designated trails in Moore County, where the pottery pinecones will be discreetly hidden within a few feet of marked paths. To enhance the experience, each pinecone will feature a special tag with a QR code, enabling finders to register their discovery and enter a drawing for a $250 gift card.
To ensure that many can share in the joy of discovery, the CVB has asked participants to keep only one pinecone, leaving any additional finds for others. The precise locations of the hidden treasures will be revealed a day prior, allowing eager hunters to strategize their search.
Celebrating Trails and Traditions
Great Trails State Day, now an official observance in North Carolina, underscores the importance of trails as economic drivers and recreational havens. With outdoor recreation contributing significantly to the state’s economy, events like the pottery pinecone hunt not only boost local tourism but also reinforce community ties.
