Why Lowcountry SC? What Makes It Special?

A perfect place to start your adventure. This charming city is filled with historic buildings, beautiful parks, and great restaurants.

The history of the area now known as South Carolina’s Lowcountry begins with pre-Columbian settlements along the coast and in the interior, specifically in present-day Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, and Georgetown counties. The first European settlers in the area were English colonists who arrived in 1526. These settlers established Charles Town (now Charleston) and began the process of colonizing the region.

Today, it is considered one of the best tourist attractions of all time! There’s something for everyone in the SC Lowcountry. History buffs will love exploring Charleston and learning about its role in the Civil War. Nature lovers can hike through Francis Marion National Forest or paddle through the ACE Basin. And foodies will be in heaven with all of the incredible seafood restaurants.

Seven Best Things To Do In Lowcountry SC

1. Bulls Island and Cape Romain National Refuge

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places in the Lowcountry to see all sorts of wildlife, from dolphins and otters to bald eagles and ospreys. The refuge encompasses more than 66,000 acres of land and water, including Bulls Island. A ferry ride from Isle of Palms or Mount Pleasant will take you to the island, where you can explore miles of hiking and biking trails, or just relax on the beach.

The highlight is definitely the sea turtle hatchlings, which you can see from May to October. Visitors can also participate in educational programs about the turtles and other wildlife in the refuge.

2. You Have To Visit The Coastal Discovery Museum On Hilton Head Island

Another spot that fits best in our list of things to do in Lowcountry, SC, is the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island. This museum is dedicated to preserving the Lowcountry’s history and culture, providing various interactive exhibits and programs that will educate and entertain visitors of all ages.

A few of the highlights include the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, where you can learn about the efforts to protect these endangered creatures; the Honey Horn Plantation, which is a living history museum that tells the stories of the area’s African-American residents; and the Nature Conservancy Salt Marsh Trail, where you can explore one of the most critical ecosystems in the Lowcountry.

3. Swamps And Alligators At Cypress Gardens In Monck Corner, South Carolina

Another off-the-beaten-path you should cross off the list is the Cypress Gardens in Monck Corner, where strolling through nature feels friendly or going on a more adventurous hike. Of course, you’ll also find plenty of opportunities to fish, canoe, and kayak. And if you’re feeling courageous, you can even zipline through the gardens!

4. Tropical Camping At Hunting Island State Park

Lowcountry SC hides gems of places that can send shivers down your spine! Check out Hunting Island State Park. Just a short drive from Beaufort, this state park is home to five miles of pristine beaches, hiking and biking trails, a campground, and an 1876 lighthouse. The island is also grand for bird watching, with over 300 species of birds calling it home.

5. See Where Tea Is Made At Charleston Tea Gardens

The Charleston Tea Gardens are a must-see for any tea lover. Located in Mount Pleasant, these gardens offer visitors a chance to see how tea is grown and processed. Visitors can also take part in tastings and tours of the gardens.

You can even take pictures with the giant tea cups!

If you love history, visiting the Charleston Tea Plantation is a must. This plantation is the oldest working tea plantation in America and offers tours and tastings of their teas.
