World-renowned author Nicholas Sparks chose Asheboro, nestled in the heart of North Carolina, as the backdrop for his latest novel, Counting Miracles. This story has not only captured the hearts of readers but also shines a spotlight on the charm of Asheboro NC and Randolph County.

Whether you’re a Nicholas Sparks fan or just an avid traveler, you can explore the places that inspired the novel.

Explore Asheboro Through the Eyes of Counting Miracles

The novel follows Tanner Hughes, a U.S. Army Delta Force veteran, as he journeys to Asheboro searching for his father and a sense of purpose. Throughout the story, Tanner visits many landmarks and local gems that you can explore for yourself.

1. Visit the Famous North Carolina Zoo

No visit to Asheboro is complete without stopping by the North Carolina Zoo—the largest natural habitat zoo in the world. With over a million visitors each year, this incredible attraction is devoted to species conservation and inspiring connections with nature.

Counting Miracles particularly highlights the Cypress Swamp and Junction Springs Cafe, giving readers and visitors alike a taste of what makes the zoo so special. This year marks the zoo’s 50th anniversary, making it the perfect time to experience this celebrated destination.

2. Encounter a Real-Life Miracle in the Uwharries

Early November of 2024 brought an incredible sight to Purgatory Mountain within the Uwharrie Mountain range—a rare white deer roaming near North Carolina Zoo property.

Coincidentally, Nicholas Sparks had just written about a mysterious white deer in the novel, turning this real-life sighting into what locals called a “miracle in the wild.”

Wander through this sprawling woodland and enjoy the natural beauty that plays a pivotal role in Counting Miracles. Uwharrie National Forest spans more than 50,000 acres across three counties and has trails suited for hikers of all skill levels. The Birkhead Wilderness trails, located entirely in Randolph County, provide a remote and tranquil hiking experience.

It’s a true haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

3. Discover Local Landmarks Mentioned in the Story

Nicholas Sparks’ attention to detail brings real Asheboro NC locations to life in the novel. Here are just a few places to visit:

  • Hampton Inn
  • Kickback Jack’s – A lively eatery conveniently located near the Hampton.
  • Coach’s Neighborhood Grill – A restaurant chain that got its start right in Asheboro.
  • Randolph County Library
  • Bojangles’ – Celebrating North Carolina’s rich culinary heritage with iconic chicken and biscuits.
  • Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen – A special mention for its importance to the community.
  • Downtown Asheboro – A hub of boutiques, antique stores, and unique shops that capture the town’s charm.

4. Experience Four Saints Brewing Company

Looking for the “brewery” referenced in the book? While Nicholas Sparks may not have named it directly, locals know that Four Saints Brewing Company is the place to be. Play board games, enjoy craft brews under twinkling string lights, and soak in the relaxed, welcoming vibe. It’s the perfect spot for an evening out.

6. Cozy Up in a Local Cabin

The quaint cabin on the cover of Counting Miracles captures Asheboro’s inviting atmosphere. For your stay, consider booking:

  • Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Camp Resort Asheboro – Enjoy cozy cabins with fire pits, family-friendly amenities, and Yogi Bear sightings.
  • Postcard Cabins – Tucked into the woods, these tiny houses offer a rustic yet comfortable stay complete with outdoor fire pits for making s’mores.

Or explore listings on VRBO and Airbnb for even more options to find your perfect home away from home.

More Must-Visit Destinations Near Asheboro

Your trip to Asheboro NC wouldn’t be complete without exploring some of Randolph County’s most iconic nearby attractions:

  • The Petty Museum (Randleman) – Learn about NASCAR legend Richard Petty and explore the Petty family legacy through a collection of historic racecars and memorabilia.
  • Seagrove – Known as the pottery capital of the United States, Seagrove is home to over 100 skilled potters. You can tour working studios and even witness the art of pottery-making firsthand. Don’t miss Carolina Bronze Sculpture Garden for its globally recognized works of art.
