Every time I visit Manteo, NC, I fall more in love with it. And I think it’s the perfect home base for an Outer Banks trip.
Although it might seem odd to choose a town not directly on the beach when visiting the OBX, hear me out, because I really think Manteo is a choice you won’t regret. The quaint town is located on Roanoke Island, surrounded by Croatan and Roanoke Sounds, meaning it still offers a wonderful coastal vibe. It boasts a gorgeous boardwalk with stunning sunrise views. Beautiful sailboats line the marina. There’s the charming Roanoke Marshes lighthouse, and the town even has a maritime museum.
Downtown Manteo is charming, historic, and though there’s plenty to do, it’s quieter than many other Outer Banks locales. It offers several cute places to stay, nice coffee shops, delicious restaurants, and the best part—it’s close to everything!
Here’s our guide to what we recommend you do on your trip to the Outer Banks while using Manteo as your home base.
