Most people experience the Outer Banks in pieces.
They pick a town, settle in, find a few favorite spots, and never really leave that stretch of road.
That’s a nice casual vacation for sure, and this list will help with that too. But for me, I want an Outer Banks adventure.
The Outer Banks is wonderful, from the border with Virginia all the way down south, where it gets much quieter. There’s wild horses, walkable coastal towns, historic waterfronts, and long stretches of open shoreline.
Let’s get started, and also these are places I’ve been so they are all recommendations based on experience not just by simply googling stuff!!!
Day 1: Corolla Village
Start up north in Corolla, where things feel a little more refined but still deeply tied to the water and its history. We’re going to stay here for two days exploring the village of Corolla and then searching for wild horses on Carova and just enjoying the Northern Outer Banks.
WHAT TO DO IN THE NORTHERN OUTER BANKS:
Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Start your morning here and make the climb before it gets busy. The view from the top shows just how narrow the Outer Banks really are, with the sound on one side and the ocean on the other.
Whalehead Club
Walk the grounds and take in the architecture and setting. It reflects an earlier version of the Outer Banks when this area felt far more remote and intentional.
Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education
Spend more time here than you expect because it adds real context to everything you’ll see this week. The exhibits are thoughtful and grounded in the environment that defines this coastline.
Currituck Maritime Museum
This museum is focused, local, and genuinely interesting, especially if you appreciate craftsmanship. It highlights boatbuilding traditions and the working water culture that shaped this area.
WHERE TO EAT
The Kind Cup
Start your morning here with coffee and something light before heading out. It’s relaxed, consistent, and the kind of place you’ll find yourself returning to without thinking about it.
Corolla Village Bar-B-Que
This is an easy lunch that fits exactly where you are without overcomplicating things. It’s local, unpretentious, and dependable in the best way…ie, the pork is awesome!
Mike Dianna’s Grill Room
This is your first real dinner and it sets the tone for the trip. It’s an old school steakhouse…comfortable, family friendly, with food that’s just elevated enough to feel like a proper start.
WHERE TO STAY
The Inn at Corolla Light
This place is convenient to everything and right on the water with absolutely ridiculous sunset views. The staff is mazing, the breakfast is complimentary. It’s a great place to stay in the Corolla area, and I’d go back again just for the view and wildlife!
Day 2: Carova Horses
This is where the trip opens up and starts to feel completely different.
WHAT TO DO
Carova Beach
You’ll drive directly onto the sand and follow the coastline north with nothing but dunes and water around you. The further you go, the quieter it becomes, and the more it feels like you’ve left everything behind. There’s two ways, with a guide or self-guided.
Corolla Outback Adventures or Wild Horse Adventure Tours
Booking a tour makes the experience smoother and takes the pressure off navigating the terrain yourself. The guides know where to go and how to find the horses without turning it into a rushed experience.
ORV To The Wild Horses
You can also drive yourself. Just make sure you have an ORV pass, a four wheel drive vehicle, recovery gear, and be sure you air down.
Seeing them out here feels completely natural and unforced, which is what makes it so memorable.
WHERE TO EAT
Lighthouse Bagels and Deli
Grab breakfast here before heading out so you can stay on the beach without interruption. It’s quick, reliable, and exactly what you want before a long, open day.
Cosmo’s Pizzeria
This is a great second stop to have in your back pocket for lunch or an early dinner. It’s casual, consistently good, and easy to fit into a beach-heavy day.
WHERE TO STAY
I’d recommend staying another night at the Inn at Corolla Light, but if you do want to switch it up The Wild Horse Inn in Corolla is a good option too!
Day 3: Duck
Duck brings you back into something more connected, walkable, and social.
WHAT TO DO
Duck Town Park Boardwalk
This is a nice addition to Duck and a great way to experience the beauty of the town. The boardwalk runs along the sound and connects shops,restaurants, and open space in a way that makes wandering feel natural.
Waterfront Shops
These shops sit right on the water and are easy to move through as you walk. It never feels overly commercial, which is part of what makes Duck stand out.
Scarborough Faire Shopping Village
A little quieter and slightly tucked away from the main path. It’s worth stepping into if you want a slower pace for part of the day.
Kitty Hawk Kites Sanctuary Vineyard Voyage
This experience starts with a boat ride across the sound and ends at a vineyard that feels completely unexpected. It’s a great way to add something different without losing the coastal rhythm of the trip.
WHERE TO EAT
Duck’s Cottage Coffee & Books
This is where you sit for a minute and let the day slow down. The combination of coffee, books, and atmosphere makes it easy to stay longer than planned.
The Blue Point
Plan this for dinner and drinks and try to time it with sunset over the sound. The Back Bar there is a great place to unwind with a cocktail.
Aqua
AQUA Restaurant is one of the Outer Banks’ standout waterfront dining spots, known for its elevated yet relaxed atmosphere overlooking the Currituck Sound. With a menu built around locally caught seafood, regional ingredients, handcrafted cocktails, and sunset views paired with live music, it’s the kind of place that turns a simple dinner into a full experience, especially if you get there around golden hour.

Sanderling Resort
This is the most elevated stay on this part of the trip and worth it if you want a standout night. It feels polished without losing the character of the Outer Banks.
Soundside rentals near the boardwalk
Staying near town makes everything walkable and easy. It’s one of the best ways to experience Duck at your own pace. Check out twiddy.com for rental listings.
Day 4: Manteo and Roanoke Island
Manteo shifts the tone and gives the trip a sense of depth and history.
WHAT TO DO IN MANTEO IN THE OUTER BANKS
Elizabethan Gardens
Walk through these slowly and take in the details rather than rushing through. The design is thoughtful and stands out because it feels intentional in every direction.
Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
The best place for sunrise in the entire Outer Banks imo. But I would come back here later in the evening when the light starts to drop. It’s quiet, reflective, and one of the most peaceful moments of the trip.
Roanoke Island Festival Park
This gives you the historical context that ties everything together. It helps you understand why this island feels different from the rest of the Outer Banks.
Roanoke Island Maritime Museum
This is another stop that connects you directly to the water-based culture of the region. It reinforces how much of life here has always revolved around the water, fishing, waterfowl, etc.
The Lost Colony
If it’s running, it’s worth planning your evening around. It’s one of the defining experiences tied to this place.
North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Spend a little more time here than you expect because it’s genuinely well done. I cannot get enough of the jellyfish here!
WHERE TO EAT
Charis Coffee Company
This place feels personal and grounded in a way that stands out. The prayer wall is a small detail that ends up being surprisingly memorable.
Poor Richard’s Sandwich Shop
A relaxed waterfront lunch that doesn’t try to be anything more than it needs to be. It’s consistent, easy, and exactly right for this part of the trip.
1587 Restaurant
This is the best overall dinner in Manteo and worth planning around. It’s refined, well executed, and still feels comfortable.
Blue Water Grill & Raw Bar
A great second option if you want something more casual but still well done. The marina views and atmosphere make it easy to settle into.
WHERE TO STAY
Tranquil House Inn
Right on the water and walkable to everything in town. It keeps your stay simple, connected, and easy to enjoy. The restaurant is amazing, the rooms are quiet and dark, and the staff is so accomodating!
White Doe Inn
One of the most thoughtful boutique stays on the Outer Banks. It feels elevated in a way that matches Manteo perfectly.
Day 5: Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kittyy Hawk
This is your blend of history and classic Outer Banks energy. You move between meaningful stops and the more familiar beach-town rhythm without it ever feeling disconnected.
WHAT TO DO
Wright Brothers National Memorial
This is one of those stops that hits harder in person than you expect. Walking the grounds makes the history feel immediate and surprisingly personal.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park
Step out onto the dunes and take your time moving through them. The scale feels unexpected and a little surreal against the backdrop of the ocean. You have to go here at sunset if you can!
Jennette’s Pier
Walk out over the water and take in the coastline from a different angle. It’s one of the cleanest and most accessible pier experiences on the OBX. You can also visit the aquarium here.
Nags Head Fishing Pier
This one feels a little more local and less polished. It’s a quick stop, but it adds character and contrast to the day.
Avalon Pier
Another classic pier that’s worth pulling into as you move through town. It’s a short stop that helps round out the experience. The water here can be spectacualar in May and June if the winds die down.
Kitty Hawk Pier
Slightly quieter and more tucked away than the others. It gives you a different feel from the larger, more active piers.
Mutiny Bay Adventure Golf
Mutiny Bay Adventure Golf is a fun, pirate-themed mini golf course that’s easy to enjoy whether you’re with family or just looking for something light and competitive. It’s a classic Outer Banks stop with creative obstacles and a laid-back, beachy atmosphere.
OBX Laser Tag & Arcade
OBX Laser Tag & Arcade is a great indoor option when you want a break from the sun but still keep the energy up.
Nags Head Dolphin Watch
Nags Head Dolphin Watch offers a chance to get out on the water and see dolphins in their natural habitat along the Outer Banks. It’s a relaxed, memorable experience that adds a different perspective to your time on the coast.

Stack ‘Em High Pancakes
Start your morning here and lean into the classic beach breakfast experience. It’s busy, energetic, and exactly what you want to kick off the day.
Ashley’s Espresso Parlour
Stop here when you want a more intentional coffee break. It’s one of the better spots in this part of the Outer Banks, and a coffee shop with character.
Waveriders Coffee Deli & Market
This is a great second coffee stop or light bite if you want something more relaxed. The surf-inspired feel fits perfectly with the area.
Fish Heads Bar & Grill
This is the stop you do not skip. Sitting under the pier with food and a drink is one of the most classic Outer Banks experiences. Go at night for the music!
Trio Restaurant & Market
Great for sandwiches and something a little more elevated without being heavy. It’s an easy stop that consistently delivers. They also have a great wine shop!
Sal’s New York Pizza
A casual stop that people return to again and again. The salad alone makes it worth it, especially if you want something lighter, but the pizza here is so good too!

Outer Banks Brewing Station
This is the main brewery stop in this area and it has a fun, laid-back energy. It’s easy to spend more time here than you planned.
Outer Banks Distilling
Head back toward Manteo if you want something a little different. It’s a quick stop that adds variety and a change of pace.

Hilton Garden Inn
Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk offers a reliable, comfortable oceanfront stay with easy beach access and amenities like an indoor pool and on-site dining. It’s a solid choice if you want convenience without giving up those classic Outer Banks views.
Outer Banks Motor Lodge
Outer Banks Motor Lodge keeps things simple and nostalgic with a classic beachfront motel feel right along the ocean. It’s all about location here, with direct beach access and an easygoing, no-frills atmosphere.
Sea Foam Motel
Sea Foam Motel delivers a retro coastal experience with oceanfront rooms and a laid-back vibe that feels true to the Outer Banks NC. It’s a great pick if you’re after something casual, affordable, and right on the water.
Shutters On The Banks
Shutters on the Banks blends a more polished beachfront stay with thoughtful touches like private balconies and both indoor and outdoor pools. It strikes a nice balance between comfort, location, and a slightly elevated coastal feel.
Oceanfront Rentals
Oceanfront rentals through Twiddy offer a wide range of homes, from cozy cottages to large group properties, all just steps from the beach. It’s one of the best ways to experience the Outer Banks NC with more space, privacy, and a true home-base feel.
Day 6: Hatteras and a Slow Coastal Day
Skip the mid-island stops today and drive straight south. This day is meant to feel slower, quieter, and more open than anything before it.
WHAT TO DO IN HATTERAS IN THE OUTER BANKS
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Spend some time here once you arrive and take in the scale of it. It’s one of the defining landmarks of the Outer Banks and feels even more impressive in person.
Beach time in Buxton or Hatteras Village
Pick a stretch of beach and stay longer than you planned. This is the kind of place where time disappears a little bit. If you have 4WD and ORV Pass I highly recommend airing down and going out to Pole Road and the beaches out that way. It is so wide open and you can even see Ocracoke from there.
Explore Hatteras Village
Exploring Hatteras Village gives you a slower, more authentic feel of the Outer Banks, with marinas, seafood spots, and a working waterfront that still defines daily life here. It’s the kind of place where you can wander without a plan and still come away with a real sense of the coast.
Graveyard Of The Atlantic
Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum offers a deep dive into the Outer Banks’ maritime history, telling the stories behind the thousands of shipwrecks that earned these waters their name. Through artifacts, exhibits, and personal accounts, it brings to life the danger, mystery, and resilience tied to this stretch of coastline.
Buxton Village Books
One of the cutest and smallest bookstores around but it has some amazing local selections and great books for the kids. It has become an annual tradition to visit.
WHERE TO EAT
Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe
Stop here for coffee or something sweet and take your time. It’s one of the most loved spots on the island and easy to understand why.
Frisco Sandwich Company
Frisco Sandwich Company is a longtime local favorite known for its creative, overstuffed sandwiches and laid-back feel.
Cafe Pamlico
If you want something more elevated, this is the move. The setting and food both make it feel like a proper evening.
Hatteras Sol
Hatteras Sol Waterside Grill is a place I go every time I visit. It’s a standout waterfront dining spot known for its creative take on coastal cuisine, blending fresh local seafood with bold, housemade flavors. The best part is it is set right on the water with sunset views over the sound, making it as much about the experience as the meal.

Cape Point Campground in Buxton
If you’re up for camping, Cape Point Campground is one of the best spots to stay, with easy beach access and some of the most iconic coastal views on the Outer Banks.

Day 7: Ocracoke Day Trip
This is one of the most memorable days of the entire trip. It feels like stepping into a completely different version of the Outer Banks NC.

Hatteras–Ocracoke Ferry
The ferry ride gives you time to slow down and reset before arriving. It’s part of the experience, not just a way to get there
The Village Of Ocracoke
Once you arrive, everything feels smaller and more intentional. The pace shifts immediately and you feel it right away.
The shops I like are: Down Creek Gallery, Village Craftsmen, Books to Be Red, Over the Moon, Pirate’s Chest Gift Shop, Ragged Sailor Trading Company, Moonraker Tea Shop and Little Rituals
Wheelie Fun Rentals
Rent a golf cart or bikes and explore without rushing. It’s the best way to move through the village and take everything in.
Ocracoke Lighthouse
Simple and understated, but worth seeing in person. It’s more about the setting than the structure itself.
South Point Road drive-on beach
Take the drive out and spend time on one of the most open beaches on the trip. Air down when you get on and air back up for free at Tradewinds Tackle Shop, which makes it easy.
Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum
This gives you a deeper understanding of the island’s history and identity. It’s small, but it adds meaning to everything around you.
Ocracoke Parasail
A unique way to take in the island from above, lifting you high over the water for sweeping views of the coastline. It’s equal parts adrenaline and scenery, giving you a completely different perspective of the Outer Banks. We saw over 100 dolphins on our parasailing trip, seriously!
Ocracoke Island Yoga
Ocracoke Island Yoga offers relaxed, all-level classes that blend movement and mindfulness, making it an easy way to slow down and reset while on the island.
Ride The Wind Surf Shop Surf Camp and Kayaking
Ride The Wind Surf Shop offers surf camps and kayaking experiences that make it easy to get out on the water, whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills. It’s a laid-back, hands-on way to experience the Outer Banks, guided by locals who know these waters inside and out.

This place is pure fun! The food is great, the beers are on tap, and the music is playing loud most nights!
1718 Brewing
This place is the staple for me on the island. I always find myself here. Maybe because it is right across from South Point where I like to watch the sunset and then I simply follow up with a post sunset beer, or maybe its the great music and delicious burgers!

The Castle Inn At Silver Lake
The Castle Inn at Silver Lake offers a more elevated, historic stay right on the harbor, with sweeping views, updated suites, and walkable access to everything in the village. Pony Island Inn
Pony Island Inn is a convenient, laid-back option just outside the village center, with easy access to both Silver Lake Harbor and nearby beaches. It’s a great base if you want something simple, comfortable, and close to everything without being right in the middle of it all.

Ocracoke Harbor Inn sits right along Silver Lake Harbor, offering waterfront views and a relaxed, coastal feel in the heart of the village. With a mix of rooms and cottages, it’s a great option if you want to stay central while still having a quieter, more residential atmosphere.
Ocracoke Campground
If you’re into beautiful beach adjacent camping with epic dark skies for a chance to see the milky way this is a wonderful spot!
Day 8: Salvo, Avon, Rodanthe for the final stretch back to mainland
This last day is about easing your way back through the middle of the Outer Banks. It feels like a quiet exhale after everything you’ve experienced.
WHAT TO DO
Horseback Riding
OBX Horseback offers guided rides along the shoreline right across from Bodie Island Lighthouse, giving you a chance to experience the Outer Banks from a different perspective with the ocean stretching out beside you.
Bodie Island Lighthouse and Pea Island
Bodie Island Lighthouse stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Outer Banks, offering panoramic views of marsh, sound, and ocean for those who make the climb to the top. Stay on the path here to avoid snakes.
Rodanthe Watersports and Campground
If you want one last bit of activity, this is the place to do it. Jet skis and sound access make it an easy, fun stop.
Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station
This is one of the most important historic sites on the coast. It tells the story of rescue crews who worked these waters long before modern systems existed.
Soundside sunset in Avon or Salvo
Take your time and find a quiet spot along the sound. The sunsets here feel wide open and like a proper close to the trip. I really enjoy Haulover for this or the lifesaving station.

Waves Market & Deli
This is the perfect casual stop as you move through the area. It’s quick, reliable, and exactly what you want on a travel day. The sandwiches are huge, the breakfast burrito is so good, and they’ve got your minor grocery needs here too.

By the time you finish this drive, the Outer Banks feels different. It’s not just beaches and towns anymore. It’s the people, the culture, a progression, a shift in pace, and a place that reveals itself the further you’re willing to go.
